If you have a great product or service that people want you are
well on your way to being successful. However, in order to lock
in and grow your success you need to maximize the attention your
products and services get.
As a small business owner you probably don't have millions of
dollars to spend on advertising campaigns to drill your
company's name into your prospects minds. That's okay. Many
small business owners find their success by effectively
developing and using their marketing ...Read the rest of this entry »

When you hear the term "team building" , the first thing that may come to mind are things such as ropes courses, a weekend retreat, or some other form of recreational activity that is intended to build camaraderie among a group and inspire them to work better together. In my years of business and consulting experience, I have never seen such activities take a dysfunctional group of people and turn them into a high performance team. Companies waste hundreds of thousands of dollars each year on ...Read the rest of this entry »

Oh March. The college basketball season reaches its pinnacle. If you're a fan (or are married to one), you know that the tournament leads off with 16 games on Thursday, 16 games on Friday, then 8 on Saturday, and 8 on Sunday. That's a lot of basketball in one weekend! (And there's even more with the "other" tournament. And throw some pro games in and you have your fill of hoops.)
I not a crazed fan, but I like to take in a game - especially a tournament game - when I get the chance. (OK, as a ...Read the rest of this entry »

Most entrepreneurs first write their business plan and then
develop their services or products. This causes them to generate
and fulfill a marketing plan that requires them to swim upstream
using the backstroke. To save the stress, consider placing the
business plan on hold until first completing a few customer
surveys. Okay, some of you are saying, "Catherine, how can you
do a survey before you know who your market is?" Yes, this is
one challenging double edge sword, that ...Read the rest of this entry »

As a result of providing marketing consulting, training and
coaching to a variety of individuals and industries over the
years, I have come to recognize that people generally approach
the business building process in one of two ways. Everyone tends
to be what I identify as either Cultivators or Harvesters. The
problem is the business building process requires both
cultivation and harvesting. Read on to determine which you are
and how to assure that you are both cultivating and harvesting

Coaching draws on many different influences. For most people the word itself is connected with sporting activities and it is easy to understand how the relationship between performer and coach works in that setting. The sporting connection also offers some useful comparisons that can help make the case for coaching. Sports coaches are rarely better performers than the people whom they coach. In fact many top sports coaches these days were fairly average performers but recognize that good ...Read the rest of this entry »

There is now much more job movement than was once the case and I don't just mean moving from one organization to another. Where once the workforce of offices, factories and shops could all be found in one building building, it is now typical to find staff dispersed across a number of locations. You may have members of your team who have an entirely different work pattern to your ...Read the rest of this entry »

Like many people who were adopted as children, Dean Allen got to a point in his life when he decided he'd like to know more about his birth family. It was a journey that changed his life. The only problem was that he did it alone. He didn't know that adoption intermediaries, who make contact between adopted people and their birth families in a sensitive and professional manner, existed. That is, until he saw a television documentary about adoption reunions, which featured the adoption charity ...Read the rest of this entry »

You've got your business plan for 2003, you've done your

You've forgotten the single most important success tool for your

WHY ENTREPRENEURS FAIL
As a coach, I talk to entrepreneurs all the time. They're sharp,
they have great products and services, and they all make the
same mistake - a mistake with two faces.
It's the marketing. They either (1) don't understand they aren't

In business, it's easy to burn bridges with people. By "burning
bridges" I mean, destroy relationships with your customers,
clients, employees, vendors, etc.
It's one of the biggest mistakes I see businesses make. And
quite frankly, it's a stupid mistake. It's so stupid, I'm
willing to admit I was the reigning champ of burning bridges
with my clients and friends...and it cost me dearly.

* I wouldn't follow-up with a referral ...Read the rest of this entry »

SOUND RELATIONSHIPS
Whether you're the Chief Executive of a corporation or the Chief Cook and Bottle Washer at home, communication is vital.
Talking is the lifeblood of sound relationships. Communication needs to flow from the top down so that everyone knows what, when, where, why and how but if there is no valve allowing freedom of expression from the bottom up, then somebody, somewhere is going to feel isolated and frustrated.
Whether its management not listening to their employees or ...Read the rest of this entry »

fearful.

This level of delegation is very important, not only to create
the space for the leader to develop visions and longer terms

who will both be challenged by new activities, but will also be
developed for the future benefit of the organisation.

Board Responsibilities for Succession Planning

Strategic Succession Planning is a critical step to serving
that Purpose and mitigating unnecessary risk. If for any

A coach is an essential figure in providing direction and

evaluated on the number of wins they can produce. In a business
setting, coaches are evaluated on how efficient they are in

coaching skills is also beneficial when cooperating and

The Old Way ' Command and Control Although workplaces and
management styles have come a long way in the last decade, the
command and control style of management behaviour remains common
practice in many companies. This management approach basically
means that employees are told exactly what to do, when to do it
and even how it should be done. The manager is in charge, has
all the answers, and fixes all the problems.
It's no surprise that plenty of people find this approach
